I grew up dreaming of being a footballer, with a back-up plan of astronaut should plan A not work out. As it transpired, Saints overlooked my footie talents and NASA weren’t hiring when I graduated back in 1985. For most of us, at some point, we realise our passion will probably remain as our hobby, not our livelihood, and we switch our minds to how we can create a fulfilling, enjoyable and rewarding career.

I don’t recall Insurance ever being suggested to me as a potential career path and if it had been, I’m not sure I’d have leapt at it – let’s be honest, it has something of a dull reputation. But that is a great shame! As a recent entrant to the industry, I can report that its image is way off the mark. Insurance can be great fun; it’s very sociable; there are ample opportunities to learn and grow; you build deep relationships with colleagues, clients and partners; you are making a difference and not to be overlooked it’s an industry that pays well.

Interesting Careers in Insurance

Is insurance really interesting? In a word, yes! Getting to deeply understand what businesses do, how they operate and what risks they face is fascinating. Helping them mitigate those risks and allowing them to go about their business is essential to the economy working. Imagine if no one would insure a ship to collect grain in Ukraine – it would simply rot on the dockside – insurance helps the world go round and brings peace of mind to people, organisations and businesses.

Job roles to consider in the Insurance industry

There is a very wide array of career options within the industry, ranging from the very analytical and statistical underwriting to account management, customer service and all the usual roles within any generic business such as HR, accounts etc. Having integrity, being diligent and well organised is essential but for us the personal attributes that make someone super successful hinge around people skills. The ability to be a good, collaborative team player; to have high energy and productivity and to get a buzz from doing a great job for your clients.

Another misconception about the industry is that it’s full of grey-haired old blokes! As someone who perfectly fits that description, I can categorically state that things are changing fast. Insurance is a fabulous industry for women and many inspirational females are enjoying stellar success!
