A Case Study

The Background

Barnbrook Systems are an innovative high tech business supplying solutions to the aerospace, defence and rail industries. They make bespoke electrical components, some safety critical, from relay switches that open doors on trains to fire suppression products and switches which ensure an efficient and safe mid-air refuelling process for helicopters. While Barnbrook is at the cutting edge of safety systems for their clients they were aware that some of their internal risk management would benefit from a refresh.

Our MD Chris Braniff met Barnbrook MD Andrew Barnett at a careers event for a local secondary School. Andrew clearly had a passion for his business, their clients and encouraging young people into the industry. We felt there was a great cultural fit between our businesses.

The Approach

It was acknowledged that a deep dive into their insurance cover, measured alongside the complex daily risks to their business was required, and so began a series of meetings to achieve this.

We introduced the concept of a defined risk management programme prior to going to market so that we could collectively partner with an insurer that offers this service as part of their package. This offers greater value for the client and a tangible solution to minimise risk and reduce insurance costs.

Armed with good data and a thorough understanding of the business we made a number of soft approaches to insurers to gauge appetite. Arch emerged as the most appropriate insurer for the project and they agreed to an advanced inspection and risk review on site at Barnbrook’s offices.

The Arch underwriter provided advice on areas of improvement for Barnbrook and agreed that ARM+ (Arch Risk Management Plus) would be included within their proposal. Reducing the overall risks for the business operationally is a great win, win for both client and insurer alike and should be reflected in keener premiums.

The Result

The leadership team at Barnbrook invested significant time (5 or 6 meetings) but can now enjoy the confidence that their internal risk management systems are as robust as the solutions they provide to their clients and that their insurance is absolutely fit for purpose.
